Cream City: The name behind Jet OUT's call sign

Ask someone from Milwaukee what “Cream City” means and you’ll likely hear about brick or the city’s history. Ask an air traffic controller, and you’ll hear about Jet OUT.

Cream City is the call sign used to identify Jet OUT aircraft when our pilots communicate with air traffic control. Its connection to Jet OUT begins in the same place the company did: Milwaukee.

What is a call sign?

A Jet OUT pilot preparing for departure might make a radio call like this: “Milwaukee Ground, Cream City 423…”

“Cream City 423” identifies the aircraft as it communicates with air traffic control throughout the flight.

For Jet OUT, the name also carries a link to where the company began.

Where Cream City comes from

Cream City has nothing to do with dairy.

The nickname comes from the distinctive cream-colored brick produced in Milwaukee during the 19th century. Local clay contained minerals that gave the bricks their light color when fired. The material became widely used throughout the growing city and was eventually shipped well beyond Wisconsin.

The bricks became so closely associated with Milwaukee that Cream City became a nickname for Milwaukee itself.

So how did a name associated with Milwaukee architecture end up on an aviation radio frequency?

Built in Milwaukee

Jet OUT began in Milwaukee as an internal flight department for a commercial real estate company.

Over five years, the operation demonstrated what disciplined private aviation could do for one business. Aircraft were based where they were needed. Crews knew the people they flew. Decisions stayed close to the operation.

When Jet OUT was built to bring that model to other owners, the parts that worked remained:

A factory-new fleet. Transparent pricing, published openly. A days-based model that aligns usage with how owners actually travel. Aircraft and teams based near the owners they serve.

Those principles became part of the operating model Jet OUT carried into new markets.

Cream City carries the Milwaukee heritage with it.

From Milwaukee to a national network

Private aircraft move. Jet OUT’s operating model is built around something more fixed: regional presence.

Jet OUT operates from regional bases, with aircraft and teams based where owners live. Centralized dispatch coordinates across the network, while locally based pilots and maintenance support familiarity, accountability, and readiness.

Today, Jet OUT operates regional bases in:

Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Miami, Florida; Scottsdale, Arizona; Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas

Each market is different. The operating standard is not.

That structure keeps aircraft and teams closer to the owners they serve while supporting travel across the national network.

More than a call sign

Jet OUT has grown beyond Milwaukee, but Milwaukee is still where the story begins.

Cream City identifies our aircraft over the radio. It also carries the name of the place where the operation that became Jet OUT was first proven.

A Milwaukee name, heard wherever Jet OUT flies.
